Plant-Based Dirty Rice Bowls

Named after the colour the rice takes when mixed with spices, this filling meal goes great with Very Good Ribz and creamy coleslaw.  

This recipe is perfect for hearty meal prep, big family dinners, and BBQs. The Very Good Ribs add a whole other layer of oomph to the meal, and ensure no one goes hungry.

PREP TIME: 10 minutes
COOK TIME: 30 minutes
YIELD: 4-6 servings 


Plant-based Dirty Rice

  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ pkg Very Good Pepperoni, chopped
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 3 stalks celery, diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • ⅛-¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 ½ cups long-grain white rice
  • 2 ½ cups no-chicken broth
  • 1 bay leaf

Creamy Coleslaw

  • 1/2 cup plant-based mayo
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • ¼ tsp celery seeds
  • 1 granny smith apple
  • 2.5 cups shredded green cabbage
  • 2.5 cups shredded red cabbage


Plant-based Dirty Rice

  1. In a large dutch-oven or heavy bottomed pot over medium-high heat, add 2 tablespoons of oil. Once hot, add in pepperoni and cook until crisp and golden, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add the onions, celery, bell pepper, garlic, salt, pepper, thyme, paprika, and cayenne. Stir and continue cooking until the vegetables are tender, 7-10 minutes.
  3. Add the rice, broth and bay leaf. And quickly bring to a boil. Cover with lid and lower heat to a low heat. Simmer for 15 minutes. Turn off heat, leave on element with lid on for 10 minutes.
  4. Before serving. Remove bay leaf and fluff with a fork.

Creamy Coleslaw

  1. While Dirty Rice is cooking, make coleslaw. In a medium sized bowl, combine mayo, apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, and celery seeds. Mix well.
  2. Grate apple into the bowl. Mix well with sauce. 
  3. Mix in cabbage. And set aside in the fridge until serving.


  1. Cook Ribz according to packaging. We suggest BBQing for this recipe. 
  2. Serve rice in bowls, with coleslaw on the side, and topped with ribz.
